Rosa botanical perfume

I have long admired Roxana's shop, Illuminated Perfume on etsy, her lovely images, her devotion to hand crafted pure botanical perfumes utilizing, to quote her, "ancient techniques of alchemy with modern technology."

Having resisted temptation for, well, not too long... I purchased a sampler set of 5 of Roxana's solid perfumes.

They were somewhat of a revelation to me, more complex then anything I was used to. I like to wear the scent on my wrists so that from time to time throughout the day I can treat myself to some very heavy sniffing! Heavenly...

I doubt I will ever be satisfied wearing anything less than a natural, hand crafted perfume... I've seen the light!

on coudless frosty February nights I gaze admiringly at the night's sky

here in Edinburgh, Scotland, I am so lucky to see clear views of the planets in the dark sky.

I always feel amazed and privileged when I look at the stars and know that we are made from the same elements. Tomorrow night the moon will be passing Saturn!

I love this beautiful original print of Saturn, from the 1940s, from Maria of Carambas, and it would look perfect in a dark hallway above a side table with the left-over light from the top of a lampshade shining up at it.

and the Moon just passed Mars two nights ago! I have always loved Mars, it is probably my most favourite planet after Mother Earth. I love the energy of Mars.

This 1948 original print of Mars would go very nicely next to Saturn!

I would have Mars positioned to the right, to offset Saturn's rings, and a few inches higher. I would have a red lacquer accent in it's dark frame, so that the light from the lamp will give it a little fire - what with it being the bringer of war!

and leaning on the wall, behind the lamp, I would have this detailed architectural plate of gryphons.

It's so detailed and fascinating!

and the perfect accompaniment to the planets.

I know I spend alot of time looking up at the incredible details on the buildings in Edinburgh when I am out and about.

and to add a perfect finishing touch to my hallway - I would have this 1951 original map of the Poles placed under glass as the top of my hall table!

Just what I need, when I come in every evening and place my keys in their dish, and say thanks to the Earth for having me here, thanks to the planets for reminding me to be humble and thanks to my fellow beings for reminding me that I must strive to do my best,

and to always remember that we came from the stars and we are all made from the same stuff!

the best place to put your wishes is on a beautiful shelf

and I love this old wooden intricate one by 86Home

it has 2 shelves and I can see it being mounted either way on the wall infact, and both ways would look very appropriate - ofcourse it all depends if you'd like your larger wish to be on top or below ....

and after you have placed your wishes in full view, then you need to take a seat every day for at least 5 minutes and contemplate them, envision them happening, feel joyous, feel grateful that they have manifested, feel having your wishes already come true and feel happiness!

February Snow Storms

February is usually a pretty cold month with some of the harshest winter weather.

Simple Childhood Pleasures

I am all for modern technology and its benefits - we have to face it without it there would be no emails, facebook and blogs to keep in touch with the outside world. But I think it is disappointing that some children today do not get to experience the simple pleasures of good old fashioned toys such as these wooden blocks.

I do remember with great happiness toys my grandfather and father made me as a child and played with them for many hours on end. I never did have such a magnificent rocking horse as this but secretly I wished I did (and maybe still do!).

At bedtime I used to have stories read to me mainly by my mother and Han Christian Anderson's tale of The Little Tin Soldier was one of them. I have read it to my little girl also which jogs the memory to such beautiful, timeless stories.

Ah yes who doesn't remember the good old spinning top. There was always little competitions between my brother and I as to who could spin it the longest. I always won of course (so I say!).

A beautiful little cart like this would have been part of many a childs life - do you recall taking the poor dog for a walk in the garden in the back of the cart, he would keep jumping out until he gave up and then just endured the bumpy ride.

Color evokes many emotions, changes a mood or a feeling of a room from warmth, serenity, purity to sophistication.

I have always had a bit of a soft spot for bright, cheery colors. Somehow they make you feel happy with the world - how could you be sad and gloomy with these sweet little felted wool bowls by hold sitting on your table with all your treasures inside.

With Valentines Day close what a fun and romantic way to say "I love you" with these two little fabric lovebirds sitting on a bright green felt heart by Intres.

be brave and mix

- mix the pastel blues and sparrow painting with the

contemplative photo of the perfect spot to 'zen out'

mix this into the display too -

a watercolour of a blue bird looking wistfully over his shoulder (did you rustle the bag of biscuits?)

There is nothing nicer than inviting a friend or two to visit, enjoying each others' company over a lovely hot cuppa.

So once you have made some delicious muffins in this wonderful vintage muffin tray,

got some fresh milk out of the fridge and popped it into a lovely china jug,

placed your best china cup and saucers on the linen tablecloth in the garden

and filled your green vintage enamel kettle with rain water on the stove, all you have to do is wait for your best friends to come around to chat and gossip and have a good old-fashioned cup of tea. Glorious!

14 days in - don't give up ....

'think different' our team motto

One good thing about being an artist on etsy is that you can find a team that suits you down to a T where the team motto goes hand in hand with your approach to art.

I think that Paula from etsy shops Industrial Habitat, Industrial Bloom and Paula Art is spot on with 'thinking different' and I am always amazed by her work and artistic insights

such as this Industrial photograph of debris on drainage pipes in Vermont!

I just love those colours and texture

and this professionally laminated photo would look just as superb inside your home, as it does on a wall outside! what a novel and beautiful way to present this art work!

infact I love Paula's work so much that I already own 2 small pieces!

I have 2 unique and tactile redwood assemblages and I was also fortunate enough to win one of Paula's original art photo assemblages which I thought looked just like hares dancing!

(I have yet to blog about them, life got in the way last year, but it is on my list for this year :)

I love Paula's style which to me is a simple (uncluttered) yet strong statement in all of her creations.

She lets the imperfect beauty of each piece speak directly to you, unashamedly flaunting it as a coveted asset.

Such a beautiful black flower!

and again - perfect either inside or out!

ofcourse if you choose to display your blooms inside then using one of Paula's recycled and finished industrial pipe vases is essential.

The scratched paint and rust on each one is such a perfect touch that only time and nature could produce.

and there is a great choice of flowers available, like any well stocked florist!

Blue petals perhaps?

Paula uses found objects to make her flowers and this is the most perfect use I have ever seen for a faucet!

Now whether your blooms are inside or out, it is always nice to appreciate an object in candle light.

It lends an air of introspection and rewards the collector a considered moment with their prize as the eye moves slowly over the shadowed form.

I light my candles every evening and they add so much atmosphere to my tiny flat.

I really love this blue candle holder above, another piece of industrial reclaimed functional art!

This is truly thinking different and totally outside the box and this is the reason I love Paula's work so much!

and if you like quantity as well as quality then a few of these tea light holders will do the job of being fantastic just fine!

Could anything imperfect ever be so perfect? I think not!

Now the good thing about being on a team with artists who push the envelope in their thinking and designs is that ideas will come easier to you, inspiration will flow freely and when you see found items all lined up in a row - like these 3 pistons - you will probably have envisioned them doing something interesting, somewhere, in your right-sided-brain.

... perhaps some type of steampunk wet room towel rail holder?

maybe even grouped standing on your coffee table in a circle as a silent triumvirate object d'art?

and ofcourse, let's think different with this couple of industrial metal bridges?

swing open garage door handles?

the serious entry point to your wine cellar?

perhaps you would like to attach them to a piece of furniture as a statement piece?

or steampunk again - towel holders for your wet room?

and ofcourse, if you have a hamster - well - every hamster needs a sturdy but rusty metal bridge to cross at least once a day (sure beats those plastic ones, and hamsters are so not into plastic didn't you know?)

... just Think Different!

Usually I hear people lament about the things they have to give up, and when I was at the gym the other day speaking with one of the boys about this, he said to me that you never hear people say they have to do more of this or that. Yeah, I thought, when was the last time I heard someone say 'hey, my resolution this year is to eat more chocolate!'

Little Christmas came into the world against his mama’s will. She tried in vain to get him out the week before xmas, but on xmas eve the youngster was kicking and moving and she knew that he would be in the world within hours.

And a little while later in the late evening’s moonlight the baby was born, strong and healthy and hungry.

Thank goodness! because as all hare mama’s know, a hungry and demanding baby makes for a fit leveret.

Word got around the glade that a very special xmas baby had been born and soon he was being greeted by the other mama’s, who came with gifts, as is the hare tradition.

One brought an abundance of love, another gave happiness, then there was the gift of compassion and that of speed, and one of patience, and the last mama of all gave the gift of humour, because being born on xmas day and not having any other presents for a whole 364 days was a bit hard to endure by anyone, let alone a tiny hare.

Christmas’s mama thanked them all kindly and then dried off his forehead which was now rather wet with all the kisses he had received. He looked up at mama and smiled and she gave him a warm hug and said to him that presents were really over-rated anyway and he should never worry about material things because attributes and emotions are so much more valuable, and after half a day they never lose their novelty!

Well, when Christmas went visiting his friends and saw all their xmas presents he wasn’t so sure what mama really meant, because he had had so much fun playing with all the toys and he had been there for nearly the whole day.

Then as was leaving a few of the other babies laughed at him and with big smirks on their faces commented that they would be getting the same amount of presents again in a few months time on their birthdays, unlike him.

Christmas wasn’t too happy when he heard that and sulked all the way home. He decided that from now on he would have a birthday every day and a present a day too.

Then he had a little think and wondered if mama would have enough wrapping paper for all his many presents, and then he wondered where he would put them all because his room was rather small and he didn’t have too much spare space. And after a really hard think he decided that he only really wanted just a few special toys, not 365 of them, because that would be too many to play with.

So before he told mama about his new plan he decided to change his mind and just make do with one huge amount of presents once a year after all.

And because he was given a sense of humour he didn’t even mind if he got less presents than any of the other babies, because appreciating a single gift was much more important than gloating over a huge pile of them.

He could always go and play with their toys he thought. Yes, that sounded good to him and he smiled a little smile to himself.

Christmas is looking forward to snoozing warmly on your armchair. He would like the window open a little please as mama will be coming by every day to see him and he will be going out to play with his friends. Well, er, his friends’ toys, let’s get the facts straight there!

And he may even bring back a few toys every now and again, especially the ones that they get bored with after half a day of playing because they have too many toys already, and what with a birthday a few months after xmas and a new batch of toys, it means that there will always be boring toys at the bottom of the toy box that have lost their novelty.

Christmas has a small collection of interesting toys that have the label ‘boring’ on them, and wants you to know that he isn’t bored by them in the slightest, because after a year of playing they merely become worn out, not boring.

Infact he would be grateful to have a rummage in the bottom of your toy box to see what you label as boring.

You never know, you could be the same as his friends – always wanting bigger and better and faster and newer ….. My, my, he will be a lucky hare this xmas!

Have a great Christmas everyone! travel safe, eat well, be kind to the twins, don't argue too much with the rellies and drink in moderation (if there is ice on the paths)!

I did my Christmas shopping online a while ago and it's all wrapped and ready for giving, (em, I only bought a few presents and made the rest).

I won't be braving the crowds in the mad xmas rush that seems to happen every year, but if you have no other choice then put the kettle on, set aside an hour of online time and take heart and read on ....

this is my gorgeous print of Esme the brown bunny by my friend Pey, just above my work table here in my living room.

Infact if I reach up from my keyboard now I can touch the frame! (and do a little dusting at the same time!)

and below Esme is my gorgeous photo of a fawn by Jen McGuinness, another friend from etsy,

and beside that gentle fawn is my Forever Heart by Pey, dedicated to my first rescue rabbit Zai.

When I received my heart in the post and unwrapped it, I was so touched that I shed a few tears.

Esme is now available as an art block (canvas on a wooden frame) and I love this version also!
I really like the depth and the texture, and it compliments Pey's textured style of clay paintings!

All I can say,is that everytime I look up at my artwork - I smile :)
